Biomedical Engineering draws on collaboration among engineers, physicians, and scientists to provide new interdisciplinary insights into medical and biological problems.

The programs offered in the Department of Biomedical Engineering seek to emphasize the confluence of basic engineering with the physical and biological sciences, particularly in the areas of biomechanicscell and tissue engineeringbiosignals and biomedical imaging, and neuroengineering.

Educational programs at all levels are based on engineering and biological fundamentals, which are taught in the Department's core curriculum. The key objectives of our undergraduate program in biomedical engineering are to prepare our students for the following:

  1. Professional employment in areas such as the medical device industry, engineering consulting, biomechanics, biomedical imaging, and biotechnology
  2. Graduate studies in biomedical engineering or related fields
  3. Attendance at medical or dental school

Our graduate program offers thorough and in-depth training in both core areas and higher-level graduate elective classes. Students of all levels also have the opportunity to engage in cutting edge research under the guidance of world-class principal investigators. Our graduates are equipped for employment in the large industrial sector devoted to health care, which includes pharmaceuticals, medical devices, artificial organs, prosthetics and sensory aids, functional tissue engineering, diagnostics, medical instrumentation, and medical imaging. Graduates also accept employment in oversight organizations (FDA, OSHA, and others), medical centers, and research institutes.
