Faculty Position in Biomechanics in the Department of Biomedical Engineering

Columbia Engineering is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University in the City of New York. A secondary appointment in the Department of Mechanical Engineering is possible. Applications at the assistant professor level are preferred, but in exceptional cases associate professors and full professors will be considered.

Applications are sought in the broad areas of biomechanics. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or its professional equivalent in the Biomedical Engineering field by the starting date of the appointment and in-depth postdoctoral experience is preferred, but not required. Applicants for this position at the Assistant Professor and Associate Professor level without tenure must demonstrate potential to do pioneering research and teach effectively. Applicants for this position at the tenured level (Associate or Full Professor) must have a demonstrated record of outstanding research accomplishments, excellent teaching credentials and established leadership in the field.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the advancement of their field and the department by developing an original and leading externally funded research program, and to the undergraduate and graduate educational mission of the department. Columbia fosters multidisciplinary research and encourages collaborations with academic departments and units across Columbia University, especially within Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC).

This position particularly seeks candidates whose research focuses on low Reynolds number flows in the field of fluid biomechanics, but will consider other areas from the molecular to cellular, and tissue level biomechanics using either experimental or modeling approaches including reactive fluid mechanics, cardiovascular flow, or fluid solid interactions.  The ideal candidate will develop new ties across campus, leveraging nearby Columbia medical schools and academic programs in the Arts and Sciences, as well as within the Department of Biomedical Engineering, building upon existing strengths in bio-imaging, cellular engineering, and biomechanics.  The Department is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
