Summer Instuctors, Science and Engineering

General Description:

The City College of New York Urban Scholars Program provides highly motivated students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in college and throughout life.  The Summer Program is more than just an academic experience.  It incorporates students’ current interests along with future aspirations in order to cultivate intellectual thinkers who become successful contributors in tomorrow’s society.

In the US Program, participants are introduced to new ways of seeing and thinking about the world in which we live—often challenged in ways they never imagined. Our program offers individual and group experiences geared to stimulate interest in areas such as: Advertising and Marketing, Business and Management, Engineering and Science and Journalism, to prepare participants for further study at the college level.  Students take real classes; learn from real faculty and walk away with something worthwhile.

Each class will meet Monday to Thursdays on the campus of the City College, from June 30 to August 1, 2008 between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm

Coursework Overview

Engineering and Science

This area of study includes an exciting blend of hands-on exercises combined with traditional lecture and discussion. Develop problem solving and critical thinking skills in math and science. Students will familiarize themselves with the operation of instruments and interpretation of data obtained by techniques not usually available through high school laboratories; participate in science and technology seminars, attend group field trips and social activities.

The US Program is seeking Instructors for the following courses:

Introduction to Engineering

This class is an overview of engineering and various engineering disciplines with emphasis on composite engineering materials, introductory hands-on experience with composites, elementary concepts of engineering science, ethical aspects of engineering, safety and environmental issues regarding the use of chemicals and machine shop technology.

Imaginative Construction with Lego Mindstorm

In this hands on class students learn about force systems and equilibrium. Applications to simple trusses, frames and machines; distributed loads; properties of areas and masses; laws of friction. This course is designed to develop the ability to analyze and solve engineering problems  while merging engineering concepts, computer programming and Lego Mindstorms to build robots that can accomplish a series of missions.

Aqua Pura

Have you ever thought what is in the water you drink from the tap or buy in the store?  Do they really have a claim to fame?  Using state of the art laboratory equipment, this course allows students to test different water samples and compare the results. At the end of the class students will make presentations about their findings.
