Two teams from Biomedical Engineering took home a combined $25,000 for their work developing cost-effective health care devices at the Columbia Venture Competition on April 29th.

AshaO2, a team consisting of Electrical Engineering alum Vera Ho MS’16 and BME MS’17 students, Hetal Baman and Tetsu Harimoto, won second place and $10,000 in the Global Technology Challenge. Their device is a simple, affordable oxygen concentrating system for use in low-resource settings, originally developed for the Biomedical Design course taught by Professor Katherine Reuther

CerVIA, a team of BME seniors Jahrane Dale, Olachi Oleru, Ritish Patnaik and Stephanie Yang took home second place and $15,000 in the Columbia Undergraduate Challenge. They developed their cost-effective cervical cancer screening device as part of the capstone senior design course led by Professor Aaron Kyle.

Congratulations to AshaO2 and CerVIA!
